Tambo Ilusion Retreat Center
Tambo Ilusion is ranked as the top attraction in its area on Trip Advisor and has won Trip Advisor's 2015 Excellence Award due to the wonderful reviews left by its previous guests!
Located in the tropical Andes of the Amazon jungle, this beautiful property is a guesthouse and retreat center. Tambo ilusión is recognized by the Ministry of Environment of Peru as a private conservation area (ACP) as its 14 hectares (34.6 acres) of land with its water source and forest have been protected by its owner for the past 30 years. Located in the rural area of Tarapoto in the San Martin region of Peru, Tambo Ilusión will transport you miles away from the city life.
In August of 2014, "El Comercio", the most prestigious newspaper of Peru, chose Tambo Ilusión as one of the top five yoga retreat centers in Peru.
If the luxury of a 5 star establishment is what you are looking for, Tambo Ilusión might not be for you. Tambo Ilusión is not a resort, it is a "chacra" (which best translate as a farm) and you are welcome to stay and live an alternative and "experiential" experience, that is, we wish to make you feel at home here.
At Tambo Ilusión, guests sleep in "tambos", cozy rustic thatched cabins that have a covered porch and a hanging hamac. Each cabin is equipped with two very comfortable double beds and mosquito nets. We choose to offer an rustic electricity-free environment in the tambos (cabins) favoring the best ambiance to disconnect.
Guests can relax in the reading room, a round cob 'tambo' made of straw and mud (an ecological building where it is always cool) where one can lounge in a hammock and nap, read and hang out.
The jewel of Tambo Ilusión is its seculded fresh water lagoon which is cool and refreshing, just a joy to swim in. Relax and meditate on the dock while enjoying the chant of birds and the murmur of the creek's running water.
The gorgeous yoga space (which is circular and has 12 meters in diameter and has a very high thatched roof) looks out on the surrounding natural beauty. The soundscape (the natural chorus of wind, birds, monkeys, insects, chickens...) will transport you to a place of natural serenity deep within yourself during your practice; especially in Savasana (the final resting pose).
At Tambo Ilusión, we also offer guests the opportunity to participate in an ayahuasca session (a traditional ceremony with sacred plants of the Amazon). This can be arranged with a local “medicine man” at an extra cost.
This tropical jungle property is operated by Johanne and Armando, a Canadian/Peruvian couple. Johanne is originally from Montreal Canada and is a certified yoga instructor and Reiki master. She also enjoys cooking healthy meals for her guests. Armando, a leader in the conservation movement of Peru is originally from Lima. After living many years in the Cusco area where he worked as a professional photographer, tourist guide on the Inca Trail and as a rafting guide, he travelled to Tarapoto and encountered a beautiful property and it was love at first sight. Armando made Tambo Ilusión his home 30 years ago and has been protecting his property, its forest and its water source ever since. Armando has many interesting stories to share about his adventures concerning his beloved, beautiful and diverse country, Peru.
At Tambo Ilusión, we are happy to host international teachers looking for a special place surrounded by natural beauty to hold personal retreats for their own students at a reasonable price.
We offer a rustic environment that is simple yet nourishing and inspiring.
The beautiful fresh water lagoon and the amazing yoga shala are the highlights of Tambo Ilusion. It is also worth mentioning that Tambo Ilusion is recognized as a Private Conservation area by the minister of environment of Peru. Although Tambo Ilusion is only 15 minutes away from Tarapoto, it has a rich fauna and flora.
We can help you in the planning process and help to organize logistical details and content for your retreat.
The yoga shala is superb. It is huge (112 square meters or 1200 square feet). It has a beautiful wooden floor, a thatched roof, a great view of surrounding nature and great acoustics. We have constructed a small platform in front of the yoga room where we put bananas and the monkeys regularly come to eat while we are practicing.
Yoga blocks, straps, bolsters, eye pillows and some sand bags are provided. If needed, a board can be provided. These items are included in the package price.
We have a capacity for 10 participant plus the teacher and an assistant.
