Samantha Whybrow

Samantha has been practicing yoga for more than 15 years and teaching for the last 8. She moved to Sri Lanka following the 2004 tsunami to work in the disability and relief sector and immediately met her main teacher, Paddy McGrath, under whose close tutelage and guidance she learned to practice and teach about free spinal movement. Since returning to Australia Samantha has been studying with Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss to refine her understanding of spinal movement.

Having been involved in a cycling accident that resulted in ongoing structural damage to her spine, Samantha has been able to use yoga to manage her symptoms. Drawing on additional training in anatomy and physiology, Samantha focuses on teaching students how to appreciate and move their bodies. Her emphasis is never about a particular asana or posture. It is about how to move into, out of, and within an asana with mindful awareness, grace, and freedom of movement, utilising active movements that are both safe and invigorating.

While Samantha is passionate about yoga she is not precious about it. She shies away from yoga studios and prefers to teach in nature. She uses music, laughter, and a practical approach to anatomy, physiology, and Buddhist psychology to help students begin to ask the questions that will ultimately lead to them becoming their own best teachers.

Samantha has taught retreats, workshops, and classes internationally and is currently based in Australia where she can be found teaching yoga outside all over Canberra. She has qualifications from Yoga Synergy and Louisa Sears' Yoga Arts but has learned the most about yoga in the ‘traditional’ way, through her mentor, Paddy McGrath. She is also an occupational therapist, working full-time with children with autism whom she teaches skills for daily living. See more photos and other events by this presenter

Oksana Sokol

Oksana is a 500 hour certified yoga teacher with Radiantly Alive, 85 hours Prenatal with Jennifer Wolfe and 200 hours with Yoga Synergy. She has studied Iyengar, Tripschore, Ashtanga, Jivamukti among other styles with different teachers worldwide. From Australia she has lived in Ubud, Bali for the last 4 years teaching yoga at various establishments including the Radiantly Alive Yoga Studio and on numerous retreats. She is the founder of Suly Yoga Shala at the Bali Global Foundation where underprivileged local students are given the opportunity to study yoga and develop their full potential.

Her discovery of the Yoga Synergy method of teaching opened up a whole new level of understanding. With a strong focus on unsupported postures and spinal movements combined with meridian stretching the style has now become her main inspiration for practicing and teaching. These techniques have tremendous potential in allowing what might otherwise be seen as challenging pose to be done effortlessly and gracefully. Generating real strength and stability in the whole body all in a relaxed and low impact way without ever having the final pose be the goal but as a transition to something else.

Her own personal experience with health challenges led her to study and practice raw food and Pranic Healing. She now shares her knowledge helping people improve their well-being through food and lifestyle choices, as well as successfully guiding individuals through personalised juice cleanses and detox programs.

Yoga for her is a humbling practice, 'it's a way of life'. Creating retreats with the message to be able to share ideas and inspiration about living a fuller, more enriched life benefiting ourselves individually and as a contribution to the greater whole.
