This retreat is for anyone interested in exploring the many unknowns we face throughout our lives either within ourselves, in our unknown futures, in our relationships, or in our losses as well as new opportunities. These thresholds, where we confront an ending of "life as we have known it," are also where we can grow larger or retreat in fear; they make up a dynamic tapestry of transition and transformation in our lives. The manner in which we meet these thresholds of change have a profound impact on our quality of life, yet in this culture there are scarce opportunities to explore these topics. In this retreat we create opportunities to befriend these tender places through the use of contemplative inner work, a model of change as outlined is Deep Change, by Susan Plummer. The retreat is based on the innovative Befriending the Unknown program through the Alliance for Living and Dying Well in Santa Barbara, using the circle of trust process from the work of Dr. Parker Palmer. Caryl Hurtig Casbon, an interfaith minister, spiritual director and retreat leader, has worked with the Center for Courage & Renewal for fifteen years offering retreats to educational leaders, health care and hospice professionals, clergy and religious communities. A speaker and writer, she also consults with the Sacred Art of Living Center. Susan Plummer, a psychotherapist and director for the Alliance for Living and Dying Well in Santa Barbara, is the author of Deep Change: Befriending the Unknown. She is the past director of a hospice in northern California and is a facilitator for the Center for Courage and Renewal.
