Located on 150 acres of majestic maple and cedar forests, lush meadows and surrounded by 3000 acres of provincial land, you can breathe fresh air, sleep deeply and feel revitalized just by being here. We have 20 km of trails accessible from the property for hiking or skiing.so you can walk for hours and not see another person or find a special place to sit still in the forest. Take in a Yoga class while you're here or discover Nia. We're pet friendly so bring your pooch for some offleash adventures.

Learning to pay attention, (vipassana meditation), a skill which can be cultivated, will help to reduce stress and diminish many problems associated with a busy lifestyle, stressed out mind and allow you to stop spinning and greet your life with awareness, acceptance and a calm response to whatever comes your way.
The goal of meditation is not to have your mind go blank and feel blissed out, unaware of life around you. Rather it’s a skill to cultivate awareness, noticing everything and choosing what, when and how to respond.
Imagine living with a greater sense of ease, more peace in life, resilience, able to deal with stress effectively and with less anxiety. MBSR is the program that cultivates that skill. Traditionally an eight week program, but this week retreat will include all of the curriculum in a condensed time frame, allowing you to deepen your practice through the week and decide what form of mindfulness suits you best.
Mindfulness is a way of cultivating awareness of whatever is happening in your life and invites you to be present moment to moment. As you become more aware of the subtleties of thoughts, emotions and actions, you naturally become less reactive to emotional situations and better able to respond to events from a place of calm perspective. This MBSR program incorporates an educational component with the experiential learning of mindfulness meditation and yoga, in a way that enables you to apply what you learn to your daily life. There is no goal of having your mind go blank and feel blissed out.

MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn in 1979. Since then it has been offered at over 200 clinics around the world and has been researched in medical settings with over 40 peer-reviewed articles in scientific literature. Hundreds of doctors refer their patients to this program when medicine is not able to meet all their needs in dealing with life issues such as chronic pain, stress related conditions and emotional turmoil. It can be a complement to modern medicine.
This week will balance time between learning new skills, group discussions, and plenty of free time to relax and enjoy the natural setting here.
Side effects of a regular meditation practice include elevated self-esteem, self-confidence, better communication skills, better relationship dynamics, improved immune system functioning, lower blood pressure and at times walking around with a smile for no apparent reason.

Liz Frost M.A. Ed is a certified yoga teacher and psychotherapist. Liz is so passionate about mindfulness that she created Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre where she lives with her husband and son. She has participated in professional training by Jon Kabat Zinn and Saki Santorelli of the Centre for Mindfulness.

I worked as a Chartered Accountant in Toronto in what I think of as my `other life'. I became vegetarian at age 25, started meditating and studying holistic health and nutrition for fun, and left the corporate world at age 30, in what I now call my 'early mid-life crisis'. I didn't know what I wanted to do, I just knew I wasn't meant to sit in an office. I travelled, backpack style, for a couple years before returning to school. Completing an M.A. Ed. through Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, that new career has resulted in being a psychotherapist. I bring an eclectic mix of training in many different models of therapy which results in therapy being tailored to one's needs. I am also a certified yoga teacher. I teach yoga as a form of meditation and incorporate mindfulness into daily activities. I literally stop and smell the roses in the garden. I continue to study, believing that one's education never really ends. My favourite teacher right now is my son Ben who has intuititively started worshipping Buddha in what he calls "The gods garden" (as opposed to the medicine wheel garden which he calls "The earth's garden" which is apparently" more important because we have to take care of the earth now"). I love the work I do and feel blessed to have such incredible teachers constantly coming here to share my vision.
I also feel blessed to call Sugar Ridge home. It truly is paradise. I live here with my husband Kurt, and son, Ben. I wake to the sound of birds at dawn, appreciate the view which changes every moment. The joy of my life is to play with Ben and go on 'expeditions' of the property. The property is so big we haven't even seen it all yet. If you're interested we can show you where the fairies live and of course our secret land of Rabbit and Toad. I am passionate about the organic gardens of Sugar Ridge and love to get dirty. I feel more at home in the forest than in the house and I'm not scared of the dark. Midnight walks with coyotes howling is heaven to me.
The first time I walked through the cedar forest here, I felt like I was home. I knew this was the place I'd been dreaming of.
