Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre was created to provide a place for people to reconnect with a part of themselves that may be neglected or hidden, to connect with others or just getaway and have some fun!
Whether you seek a much needed R&R break, a getaway from kids and family, romance, or a deeper spiritual connection, we will cater to your needs to make your visit a memorable experience. The staff here look forward to making your stay enjoyable. Surrounded by nature, beds are comfy, duvets are cozy, people are friendly and the food is yummy - what more could you want?
Located on 150 acres of majestic maple and cedar forests, lush meadows and surrounded by 3000 acres of provincial land, you can breathe fresh air, sleep deeply and feel revitalized just by being here. We have 20 km of trails accessible from the property for hiking or skiing.so you can walk for hours and not see another person or find a special place to sit still in the forest. Take in a Yoga class while you're here or discover Nia. We're pet friendly so bring your pooch for some offleash adventures.
We offer a year of events you can join and are open year round.

Whether you are in need of some space to think and reflect or are looking to nurture yourself in a spiritual and peaceful environment,
this silent retreat provides the setting to return to yourself.
Take this opportunity to enter into the stillness of silence. It is a wonderful way to reconnect with your inner wisdom and sort out the mental chatter of daily life.
Time in silence helps you to feel revitalized by taking a break from communication and turn attention inwards.
You will have the opportunity to meet other retreatants at the beginning of the retreat and we will go into the silence after dinner on the first day.
Ways to communicate if necessary will be explained with the initial orientation session after arrival.
Do you wonder what the heck you do on a silent retreat – isn’t it boring? Isn’t it difficult to be quiet? Yes, and no.
With the silence comes clarity of thought, motivation and attention. Without distractions of communication, electronics and media you can focus on your own thoughts, become more self-aware and grow a little more.
We will spend time with the following activities:
- Meditate – sitting, walking, eating & working are all forms of meditation
- Personal practice of movement such as yoga which is done in silence and without instruction
- Read spiritually uplifting books
- Enjoy natural beauty – walk from the Centre through forest trails
- Connect with others in a deeper way – through shared experience without talking about it
- Be nurtured by friendly staff and supportive teacher
- Rest, recuperate and have time for reflection & napping
- Enjoy delicious, organic vegetarian meals to nourish your body

There is no religious focus on this retreat. People from all paths and all walks of life come on retreat and benefit from the shared practice. You could be Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Atheist, Agnostic or anything in between! In silence we can recognize our similarities as beings of love, desiring peace.
Private meetings are available with Liz during the retreat. You will have a sign up sheet available to book a time that suits you. The meetings generally last from 20 to 30 minutes, and there are no formalities. You may bring a question you would like to share, or you may come just to be together in silence and see what comes up.
No experience is necessary. The initial orientation session will provide an opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to explore various ways to sit comfortably using a chair, cushion etc.
Work meditation is a daily period of shared work to take care of the daily stuff of life: washing dishes, preparing food, sweeping the floor, cleaning the washrooms, weeding the gardens. As we take responsibility for a task. we have another opportunity to become more aware of our inner dialogue.

I worked as a Chartered Accountant in Toronto in what I think of as my `other life'. I became vegetarian at age 25, started meditating and studying holistic health and nutrition for fun, and left the corporate world at age 30, in what I now call my 'early mid-life crisis'. I didn't know what I wanted to do, I just knew I wasn't meant to sit in an office. I travelled, backpack style, for a couple years before returning to school. Completing an M.A. Ed. through Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, that new career has resulted in being a psychotherapist. I bring an eclectic mix of training in many different models of therapy which results in therapy being tailored to one's needs. I am also a certified yoga teacher. I teach yoga as a form of meditation and incorporate mindfulness into daily activities. I literally stop and smell the roses in the garden. I continue to study, believing that one's education never really ends. My favourite teacher right now is my son Ben who has intuititively started worshipping Buddha in what he calls "The gods garden" (as opposed to the medicine wheel garden which he calls "The earth's garden" which is apparently" more important because we have to take care of the earth now"). I love the work I do and feel blessed to have such incredible teachers constantly coming here to share my vision.
I also feel blessed to call Sugar Ridge home. It truly is paradise. I live here with my husband Kurt, and son, Ben. I wake to the sound of birds at dawn, appreciate the view which changes every moment. The joy of my life is to play with Ben and go on 'expeditions' of the property. The property is so big we haven't even seen it all yet. If you're interested we can show you where the fairies live and of course our secret land of Rabbit and Toad. I am passionate about the organic gardens of Sugar Ridge and love to get dirty. I feel more at home in the forest than in the house and I'm not scared of the dark. Midnight walks with coyotes howling is heaven to me.
The first time I walked through the cedar forest here, I felt like I was home. I knew this was the place I'd been dreaming of.
