Pleasant Valley SanctuaryPleasant Valley Sanctuary is located on a secluded and truly charming stretch of the Sierra Nevada foothills in Northern California. We are a small, spiritual community living our highest ideals and sharing that process with others. Living off-grid since 2002 has allowed us to develop our own harmonious, workable homesteading model, that is centered around authentic experience of the Divine through meditation and yoga. We welcome those who want to experience the gifts of such a lifestyle for work exchanges or internships. We also have a busy schedule of structured retreats led by both residents and our extended spiritual community.
We believe, as the great yogi master Paramhansa Yogananda did, that small, spiritually committed communities with a cooperative spirit are both powerful tools for our own spiritual growth and the key ingredient to uplifting the planet.

DescriptionWe welcome you to spend some time as part of our spiritual family, homesteading for the Divine! Available from April through October, our “Yoga Life” internship program has grown in popularity, deeply touching the lives of many seeking souls. This program draws from the best of what the ashram has to offer but with greater flexibility, allowing us to practice putting Spirit first and living life. A structured, group dynamic helps to support the good habits and discipline that nourish spiritual awakening. Free flowing recreation, social time and solitude blend into service and practice in a unique confluence during the Yoga Life program. Throughout the course of the Yoga Life, participants take part in a range of experiences: Foremost is a grounding in the complete science of classical yoga, or Raja yoga. Drawing primarily from the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda and the path of Kriya Yoga, we dive into scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali’s yoga sutras. Effective and powerful techniques in pranayam, concentration, chakra awareness and meditation are shared and made clear. There is much to be shared about the techniques of organic gardening and permaculture that have made our garden a spectacular and fruitful place. In addition to our own experience we love to have other interns share their own expertise in the field. Learn about soil composition, planting, seed-starting, fertilizing and of course weeding! Rarely does an intern or guest leave without raving about our menu. Learn many tips for cooking (and share your own) based on creative preparations of ayurvedic, raw and sometimes vegan dishes. As we slowly grow our infrastructure, there are many opportunities to learn about basic skills such as carpentry, forestry, landscaping and natural building. We try to keep a mix of all levels of experience so the Sanctuary has become a very special venue for other yoga teachers to share and grow in their teaching. Last, but not least, we take awesome daytrips to beautiful places, such as the Sierra Buttes, Lake Tahoe and of course the stunning Yuba River just miles away.
AccommodationsAccommodations (depending upon your choice of housing) include either a camp-site in our lovely tent village or a single or shared space in one of our sweet cabins.
