The Community of Jesus is an ecumenical Christian community in the Benedictine monastic tradition whose mission is to be a faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to glorify God through worship, the common life, and the creative arts. The 230 professed Community members come from a wide variety of denominational backgrounds and occupations, and include celibate brothers and sisters, married couples, and single adults.
Through the centuries, Christians have gathered to form communities in which they have supported one another in prayer, work, and fellowship. On a small plot of land overlooking Rock Harbor, Massachusetts, that commitment has taken the form of an ecumenical Christian community in the Benedictine monastic tradition. Members of the Community make professions of commitment according to their Rule of Life, including vows of obedience, stability, and conversion of life.
A retreat at the Community of Jesus is an opportunity for spiritual nourishment and physical refreshment. Located on the shores of Cape Cod Bay, within the setting of this monastic community, the guesthouses are places of hallowed quiet, set aside for use by groups or individuals who come in search of God’s healing presence and strengthening word. The simple beauty of the guest rooms and the meals lovingly prepared by the Sisters and other Community members are designed to be expressions of hospitality and extensions of God’s gracious care.
Space is available for both personal and group retreats, each of which can be designed around the particular goals and needs of the retreatant. Spiritual direction or counseling can be made available for individuals, and teaching and conversation sessions can be arranged for groups. Periodically retreats and quiet days are also offered, focusing on various biblical themes or topics of Christian spirituality. Retreatants are invited to participate in the Community’s daily rhythm of prayer, including Liturgy of the Hours and Holy Eucharist.
