We, the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel, are women responding to the call to live in community according to the Gospel and the Rule of St. Benedict. Together we seek God in a balanced life of prayer and work, simplicity, hospitality, and service. While our vow of stability leads us to a special care for the people of the local area, we are deeply conscious of sharing the universal mission of the Church.
Benedictines are not restricted to any one type of ministry. They are encouraged by the Rule of Benedict to respond to the needs of the times and of the local community.
Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel teach in schools and parishes; they work as counselors, chaplains, and pastoral associates; they are artisans, cooks, and gardeners. As a community, the Benedictine Sisters sponsor two ministries. Shalom Prayer Center welcomes people from all religious and cultural traditions for retreats, workshops, sabbaticals, spiritual direction, and spiritual nourishment. St. Joseph Shelter and Mission Benedict provide food, clothing, emergency and transitional shelter, and emergency assistance to the homeless and the needy.
Hospitality, an open and welcoming attitude to all who visit or seek help, should permeate a Benedictine community. The Sisters, as advised by St. Benedict, “welcome all guests as Christ,” hosting groups for workshops, conferences, or special events.
